Lithium batteries and solar inverters

Storing solar energy for the evening, securing power during outages or running a remote site: batteries and inverters are at the heart of these solutions. The right choice depends on the backup time you want and the appliances you need to keep running.

The role of the solar inverter

The inverter is the brain of the system: it converts the panels’ direct current into alternating current your appliances can use, optimises production and handles safety functions. There are several types:

  • Grid-tied inverter: for simple self-consumption, without a battery.
  • Hybrid inverter: manages panels, battery and grid at the same time; it can switch to backup mode during a power cut.
  • Off-grid inverter: for sites without a grid connection, with batteries and sometimes a generator.
  • Pump drive: dedicated to solar water pumping.

Why choose a lithium battery?

Lithium batteries, particularly lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), withstand many more charge and discharge cycles than traditional lead-acid batteries, accept deeper discharge and need no maintenance. Their built-in battery management system (BMS) protects the cells and communicates with the inverter.

Lead-acid batteries (AGM, gel) are cheaper to buy, but their shorter lifespan and lower usable capacity often make them less attractive over time. We present both options when it makes sense for your project.

How much battery capacity do you need?

Capacity (in kWh) is calculated from the appliances to power and the duration required: lighting and fridge during a power cut, the whole evening’s consumption, or full independence for a remote site. An oversized battery is expensive; an undersized one drains too quickly. The budget for a system with storage is therefore set on quote.

Installation and safety

Batteries are installed in a ventilated room, away from direct heat and moisture, with proper electrical protection (fuses, isolators, correctly sized cables). Inverter and BMS settings are checked during commissioning.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lithium battery essential?

No. To cut your bill, self-consumption without a battery is often the most cost-effective. A battery is useful if you use a lot of power in the evening, face outages or have no grid connection.

Can a battery be added later?

Yes, if the system is designed for it: a hybrid inverter from the start makes adding one later easier. On an existing system, a compatibility study is required.

How much does a lithium battery cost in Morocco?

The price depends on capacity, brand and the associated inverter. We prepare a quote once your backup needs are defined. Request your free assessment.
