Solar Batteries in Morocco: Prices, Lithium vs Gel and How to Size One
A solar battery stores daytime solar power for the evening, the night and grid outages. In Morocco in 2026, a 5 kWh LiFePO4 lithium battery costs roughly 11,000 to 14,500 MAD and is already cheaper than gel per usable kWh.

What a solar battery does
A solar battery stores the electricity your panels produce during the day and releases it when they stop producing: in the evening, at night or during a grid outage. Without one, any surplus at midday is either lost or exported to the grid for nothing. With one, you keep it for later. In Morocco, home batteries are used for three things:
- Evening self-consumption: lighting, TV, fridge and fans running on stored sunshine.
- Backup during power cuts, if the inverter has a backup output.
- Off-grid living for remote villas, farms and cabins.
The battery is always managed by a hybrid inverter or an off-grid inverter-charger; see our solar inverter guide.
| Battery | Energy | Price range (MAD) |
|---|---|---|
| Gel 12 V 100 Ah | 1.2 kWh | 1,900 – 2,600 |
| LiFePO4 12.8 V 100 Ah | 1.28 kWh | 3,000 – 4,000 |
| LiFePO4 48 V 100 Ah | ≈ 5 kWh | 11,000 – 14,500 |
| LiFePO4 48 V 200 Ah | ≈ 10 kWh | ≈ 21,000 – 25,000 |
Lead-acid, AGM, gel or lithium?
Lead-acid batteries come in three main forms: flooded (needs topping up with distilled water and releases hydrogen when charging; car batteries belong here and fail fast in daily solar use), AGM (sealed, maintenance-free, sensitive to deep discharge and heat) and gel (sealed, slightly more tolerant of cycling and heat, and the most common lead battery for solar in Morocco). All of them should only be discharged to about 50%.
"Li-ion" is a family, not a single chemistry. NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) is energy-dense and common in electric cars but less thermally stable. LiFePO4, also called LFP, is slightly bulkier but far more stable in heat, longer-lasting and cobalt-free. Almost every lithium solar battery sold in Morocco is LiFePO4; if the datasheet doesn't say so, ask.
| AGM | Gel | LiFePO4 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cycle life (datasheets) | ≈ 400 – 600 at 50% discharge | ≈ 600 – 1,200 at 50% discharge | 6,000+ claimed at 90% discharge, 25 °C |
| Recommended depth of discharge | ≈ 50% | ≈ 50% | 80 – 95% |
| Typical life in daily use | A few years | A few years | Often 10 years or more |
| Maintenance | None | None | None (built-in BMS) |
| Heat tolerance | Poor | Fair | Good |
| Cost per usable kWh in Morocco | Rarely listed separately | ≈ 2,800 – 4,400 MAD | ≈ 2,000 – 3,100 MAD |
Cycle figures come from datasheets of common models (Victron, Ultracell, Dyness, Pylontech) tested at 20–25 °C. Real life in a hot room is shorter, especially for lead-acid.
12 V, 24 V or 48 V?
The battery voltage must match the inverter, and it should rise with power. A 3,000 W inverter draws about 250 A from a 12 V battery but only about 63 A at 48 V.
- 12 V: up to about 1–1.5 kVA. Camper vans, boats, small cabins.
- 24 V: about 1.5–3.6 kVA. Small off-grid homes and farms.
- 48 V (51.2 V for lithium): 3 kW and above. The standard for home hybrid inverters in Morocco.
- High voltage (several hundred volts): stackable batteries for HV hybrid inverters, such as Huawei LUNA2000.
Converting Ah to kWh
Compare batteries in kWh, not amp-hours: kWh = volts × Ah ÷ 1,000. A 12 V 200 Ah gel battery holds 2.4 kWh (about 1.2 kWh usable), while a 51.2 V 100 Ah LiFePO4 holds 5.12 kWh (about 4.6 kWh usable). In series, voltages add up; in parallel, amp-hours add up.
Sizing a battery for evenings and power cuts
- List the appliances you want on battery, with their wattage and hours of use after sunset.
- Multiply and add up to get watt-hours.
- Add 10–15% for inverter and battery losses.
- Divide by the usable fraction: 0.9 for LiFePO4, 0.5 for gel.
- Check that the panels can refill it: in Morocco, 1 kWp of panels produces roughly 4.5 to 5 kWh a day on average, less in winter.
Hypothetical example: a villa in Marrakech. The owners want evenings and outages covered: lighting 400 Wh, fridge and freezer 1,000 Wh, TV and router 600 Wh, water pressure pump 200 Wh and ceiling fans 400 Wh, a total of 2.6 kWh. With 15% losses that is about 3 kWh, or about 3.3 kWh of LiFePO4 capacity. A single 48 V 5 kWh battery (11,000 to 14,500 MAD) covers it with margin. Running air conditioning through the night is another matter: at roughly 1 kW for eight hours, it alone needs about 8 kWh, which means a 10 kWh battery or more. It is usually cheaper to run the AC during the day on solar.
BMS, inverter compatibility and formats
Every LiFePO4 battery has a BMS (battery management system) that balances the cells and cuts off on over-charge, deep discharge, short circuit or extreme temperature. Modern 48 V batteries talk to the hybrid inverter over a CAN or RS485 cable, so the inverter knows the exact state of charge and respects the BMS current limits. Before buying, check that the battery is on the inverter maker's compatibility list.
Batteries come as wall-mounted units (about 5 kWh each, ideal for homes), rack modules for technical rooms, or stackable high-voltage towers. 48 V modules are added in parallel, so choose a model you can expand later.
Heat and placement in Morocco
Heat is a battery's worst enemy. For sealed lead-acid, a widely quoted rule of thumb (Battery University) says every 8 °C rise in average temperature roughly halves battery life. LiFePO4 copes better, but it still ages faster when hot, and its BMS blocks charging above about 50–55 °C. Most models also refuse to charge below 0 °C, which matters in unheated rooms in Ifrane or the Atlas in winter.
- Never on the roof, in the sun or in a metal rooftop shed, which turns into an oven in a Marrakech summer.
- Indoors, shaded and ventilated: a garage, a technical room or under the stairs, ideally on the ground floor and as close to 25 °C as possible.
- Away from water heaters, kitchens and butane bottles, and close to the inverter.
- Check the IP rating: some batteries are IP20 and must be kept away from dust and water.
Safety
Use a DC fuse or breaker close to the battery, correctly sized cables and properly tightened lugs. Ask for lithium certificates such as IEC 62619 (stationary lithium battery safety) and UN38.3 (transport). Flooded lead-acid needs ventilation because of hydrogen. Never open a lithium battery or mix old and new batteries.
Solar battery prices in Morocco (2026)
| Battery | Energy | Price range (MAD) |
|---|---|---|
| Gel 12 V 150 Ah | 1.8 kWh | 2,500 – 3,600 |
| Gel 12 V 200 Ah | 2.4 kWh | 3,200 – 5,000 |
| LiFePO4 24 V 100 Ah | 2.56 kWh | 6,000 – 7,500 |
| LiFePO4 15–16 kWh packs | 15 – 16 kWh | ≈ 26,000 – 34,500 |
| Cost per kWh, lithium | ≈ 1,700 – 2,800 per nominal kWh (≈ 2,000 – 3,100 usable) | |
| Cost per kWh, gel | ≈ 1,400 – 2,200 per nominal kWh (≈ 2,800 – 4,400 usable) |
Indicative Moroccan market prices, collected in November 2026; they vary by brand, power, quantity and installation. Prices are for the battery alone. Brand, warranty handled in Morocco, format (high-voltage batteries often need an extra controller) and promotions explain most of the spread. A 5 kWh lithium battery installed typically comes to about 15,000 to 25,000 MAD depending on the brand. For complete systems, see our guides to home solar kits and solar panel prices.
Does a battery pay off without net metering?
Unlike many European countries, Morocco has no residential net metering. Law 82-21 caps surplus sales at 20% of annual output, and ANRE says the low-voltage buy-back tariff will be set later. Exported surplus currently earns nothing.
A rough calculation, with assumptions to adapt: a 5 kWh LiFePO4 at 11,000 to 14,500 MAD, cycled once a day for ten years, delivers about 16,800 kWh, or about 0.65 to 0.9 MAD per stored kWh (before losses and inverter). A gel bank with the same usable energy, lasting about 1,000 cycles, works out at about 2.7 to 4 MAD per kWh. With grid power at roughly 1.2 to 1.6 MAD/kWh for a villa using more than 300 kWh a month, daily-cycled lithium can pay off; gel does not.
Brands you will find in Morocco
- LiFePO4: Dyness, Deye, Must, MES, Elitec, Sofar, HPower and Blue Carbon are widely listed; Pylontech is mostly to order; Huawei LUNA2000 is a high-voltage battery for Huawei inverters; EcoFlow sells premium all-in-one systems.
- Gel and AGM: OUTDO, Leoch, Ultracell, Ecogreen, HPower, Sunlight and Victron.
- Maribat (Marocaine Industrielle des Batteries) is a Moroccan manufacturer based in Nouasseur, near Casablanca, best known for automotive lead-acid batteries; press reports say its range also covers photovoltaic uses. Ask for the datasheet before using any battery for solar.
Recycling old lead batteries
Used batteries are classified as hazardous waste in Morocco under Law 28-00 on waste management. Never dump, drain or burn them. Return them to the seller when you replace them (many take old batteries back) or hand them to an authorised collector. For end-of-life lithium batteries, contact the brand's distributor.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using car batteries for solar.
- Comparing amp-hours across different voltages.
- Draining gel batteries deeply every night.
- Installing batteries on the roof or in the sun.
- Mixing old and new batteries, or different brands.
- Buying a lithium battery the inverter cannot communicate with.
- Too few panels to recharge the battery.
- Sizing the system to sell surplus power.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a solar battery cost in Morocco?
As of November 2026, expect about 1,900 to 2,600 MAD for a 12 V 100 Ah gel battery, 3,000 to 4,000 MAD for a 12.8 V 100 Ah LiFePO4, 11,000 to 14,500 MAD for a 48 V lithium battery of about 5 kWh and roughly 21,000 to 25,000 MAD for 10 kWh. These are battery-only prices, before installation.
Is lithium or gel better for solar in Morocco?
For daily cycling, LiFePO4 lithium. You can use around 90% of its capacity instead of about 50% for gel, it lasts several thousand cycles and it handles heat better. Gel only makes sense for small 12 V systems used occasionally.
How long does a LiFePO4 solar battery last?
Major brands quote 6,000 cycles or more at 90% depth of discharge and 25 °C, and warranties of 5 to 10 years are common. Installed in a cool, shaded room and paired with a compatible inverter, a good LiFePO4 battery can be expected to last around ten years or more.
Can I sell my surplus solar power to the grid instead of buying a battery?
Not profitably for now. Law 82-21 has been in force since 9 June 2026, but surplus sales are capped at 20% of annual output and no low-voltage buy-back tariff has been set for homes yet. Storing your surplus in a battery is currently the only way to use it at home.
Will a solar battery keep my house running during a power cut?
Yes, if it is connected to a hybrid inverter or an inverter-charger with a backup output, and the circuits you want to keep on are wired to that output. A standard on-grid inverter shuts down during an outage, even in full sun.
Can I leave a battery in a holiday home that is closed all summer?
Yes, provided it sits indoors in a shaded, ventilated room. Heat building up in a closed house is the main risk, so avoid rooftop sheds and sun-facing walls, keep the monitoring app connected and follow the manufacturer's storage instructions.
