Solar Inverters in Morocco: Hybrid, On-Grid or Off-Grid, and What They Cost

The inverter turns your panels' DC output into 220/230 V AC and runs the whole solar system. In Morocco in 2026, expect roughly 6,000 to 10,500 MAD for a 5 kW on-grid inverter and 11,000 to 17,000 MAD for a 5 kW hybrid inverter.

What a solar inverter does

Solar panels produce direct current (DC). A solar inverter converts it into 220/230 V, 50 Hz alternating current for your sockets. It also:

  • tracks the panels' maximum power point (MPPT) all day;
  • synchronises with the grid and disconnects during a grid failure (anti-islanding), so line workers stay safe;
  • on a hybrid inverter, manages battery charging and discharging;
  • sends production data to a monitoring app.

The inverter decides what your system can do: cut your bill, keep the lights on during an outage, or run without the grid.

Types of solar inverter compared

  • On-grid (string) inverter: connects one or more strings of panels to your home. Simplest, most efficient and cheapest, but no battery, and it shuts down during a power cut even in full sun.
  • Hybrid inverter: on-grid inverter, battery charger and backup output in one box. It is the most requested option in Morocco in 2026, partly because exported surplus earns nothing for homes. Most run on 48 V batteries; some (Huawei, high-voltage ranges from Deye or Solis) use high-voltage batteries. See our solar battery guide.
  • Off-grid inverter-charger: for sites with no grid, such as farms, remote villas and cabins. It usually includes an MPPT charge controller and can charge from a generator. It runs on 12, 24 or 48 V and is not designed for grid connection.
  • Micro-inverters: one unit behind one to four panels, producing AC directly. Each panel works independently, which helps on shaded or multi-orientation roofs, and there is no high-voltage DC on the roof. They cost more per watt, sit in the heat under the panels and need roof access for repairs. Enphase, Hoymiles and APsystems are well-known brands, but prices are rarely displayed in Morocco.
  • Optimisers: small boxes under each panel, paired with a compatible string inverter of the same brand (Huawei offers them), to limit the impact of partial shading.
Type Battery During an outage Best for Indicative price (MAD)
On-grid (string) No Shuts down Cutting bills, daytime use 6,000 – 10,500 at 5 kW
Hybrid Yes (48 V or HV) Powers backup circuits Homes with outages, storing surplus 11,000 – 17,000 at 5 kW
Off-grid inverter-charger Yes, required Runs (no grid) Farms, remote homes, cabins 1,500 – 7,000 at 1 – 5 kVA (Must class)
Micro-inverters No (except dedicated systems) Shut down Shaded or complex roofs On quote (≈ 1,000 – 2,500 per unit)

Single-phase or three-phase?

Most Moroccan flats and houses have a single-phase 220/230 V supply; many villas, workshops, farms and businesses are three-phase 380/400 V. Match the inverter to your meter. Common single-phase residential ranges run from 3 to 6 kW (Huawei SUN2000-L1, Deye SG04LP1), with some hybrids up to 10–12 kW. A three-phase inverter spreads output across all phases and suits larger systems or three-phase loads, at a higher price: about 10,500 to 12,500 MAD for a 5 kW three-phase on-grid unit. With export limitation on three-phase, check whether the inverter regulates per phase or on the total.

Sizing: kW, kWp and the DC/AC ratio

Panel power is rated in kWp under test conditions; inverter output in kW AC. The ratio between them is usually 1.1 to 1.3. Panels rarely reach their rated output, especially in Moroccan summer heat, so mild oversizing loses very little. Stay within the manufacturer's limits: Huawei recommends up to 7.5 kWp on its SUN2000-5KTL-L1, and Deye's 2026 datasheet gives 8,000 W maximum PV input for the SUN-5K-SG04LP1. Example: ten 620 W panels (6.2 kWp) pair well with a 5 kW inverter.

For a hybrid, the AC output must also cover every appliance on the backup circuit at the same time. Deye's datasheet allows a peak of twice the rated power for 10 seconds in backup mode, enough for a fridge or pump to start.

MPPT, strings and efficiency

Each MPPT input handles one string; two MPPTs let you use two roof orientations. Check three things:

  • Voltage: the string must stay within the MPPT window (150–425 V on the Deye 5 kW, 500 V maximum; 600 V maximum on the Huawei L1). Panel voltage rises in cold weather, so designs for Ifrane or the Atlas must use the site's lowest temperature.
  • Current: large modern panels are high-current, about 14 A short-circuit for a 620 W Jinko and about 18.5 A for a 705 W Canadian Solar. Deye's 2026 5 kW datasheet accepts 18 A per MPPT, against 13 A on older versions. More on panels in our solar panel types guide.
  • Efficiency: compare European efficiency, not just the peak. Huawei quotes 98.4% maximum for the SUN2000-5KTL-L1; Deye quotes 97.6% maximum and 96.5% European for its 5 kW hybrid. Off-grid inverter-chargers are less efficient (about 93% peak for a Growatt SPF 5000 ES) and draw power when idle.

Heat, derating and placement

Huawei and Deye datasheets give full output up to about 45 °C ambient, then the inverter reduces power to protect itself (derating), up to a 60 °C operating limit. A sun-facing wall or a metal cabinet on a Marrakech rooftop easily exceeds 45 °C in summer. Mount the inverter in the shade (north wall, garage, technical room), respect the clearances in the manual, never in a closed cupboard, and shelter it from salt air on the coast. IP65 protects against dust and water jets, not sunlight.

Backup (EPS) during power cuts

An on-grid inverter stops as soon as the grid fails. A hybrid's backup or EPS output only powers the circuits wired to it, so decide at installation which priority circuits to protect: fridge, lighting, router, water pressure pump, a few sockets. Inverter-chargers switch over in milliseconds (10 ms typical, 20 ms maximum on the Growatt SPF 5000 ES datasheet), fast enough for a computer to stay on; setups with an external backup box are slower, with under 3 seconds quoted for Huawei's Backup Box. Backup power is limited by both inverter and battery: a 5 kW hybrid will not run two air conditioners, an oven and a kettle at once.

Zero export and Law 82-21

Morocco has no residential net metering. Law 82-21 caps surplus sales at 20% of annual output, and ANRE has only set a buy-back tariff for medium and high voltage; the low-voltage tariff for homes will be set later. Surplus exported from a home is therefore given away.

Hence export limitation ("zero export"). A smart meter or current clamps at the grid connection measure power flows, and the inverter throttles production to match household consumption and battery charging. Huawei uses its Smart Power Sensor, Deye clamps or a meter, Growatt and Solis a dedicated meter. The curtailed energy is lost, so run the washing machine, electric water heater, pool pump or air conditioning at midday, or add a battery.

A grid-connected system still falls under Law 82-21 when set to zero export: a declaration to ONEE or the regional multi-service company below 11 kW. Ask for the inverter's grid-compliance certificates (for example IEC 62116 for anti-islanding).

Monitoring apps

Each brand has its own app over Wi-Fi or 4G: FusionSolar (Huawei), Solarman or Deye Cloud (Deye), ShinePhone (Growatt), SolisCloud (Solis). Useful for owners who live abroad part of the year: you can check production, battery state and alarms remotely, and a slow decline in output usually means dusty panels.

Indicative Moroccan market prices, collected in November 2026; they vary by brand, power, quantity and installation. These are inverter-only prices. An installed 5 kWp on-grid system typically costs 40,000 to 65,000 MAD, and a 5 kWp hybrid with 5–10 kWh of storage 55,000 to 95,000 MAD; see our guides to home solar kits and solar panel prices.

Warranty

Manufacturer warranties are usually 5 to 10 years depending on brand and country; Deye's datasheet, for example, states 5 years and up to 10 depending on the country of installation. Ask who handles the warranty in Morocco, how long a replacement takes, and keep the invoice and serial number.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying an on-grid inverter when you want backup during outages.
  2. Ignoring whether your meter is single- or three-phase.
  3. Overlooking MPPT voltage and current limits with large panels.
  4. Mounting the inverter in direct sun or a closed rooftop box.
  5. Pairing it with an incompatible battery (low vs high voltage, no communication).
  6. Undersizing the backup output.
  7. Designing the system to export surplus that earns nothing.
  8. Connecting uncertified equipment to the grid.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a solar inverter cost in Morocco?

As of November 2026, on-grid inverters cost about 4,500 to 8,500 MAD at 3 kW and 6,000 to 10,500 MAD at 5 kW single-phase. Hybrid inverters cost about 11,000 to 17,000 MAD at 5 kW and 17,000 to 30,000 MAD at 10 kW. Entry-level off-grid inverter-chargers of 1 to 5 kVA sell for 1,500 to 7,000 MAD.

What is the difference between a hybrid and an on-grid inverter?

An on-grid inverter converts solar power for your home but cannot manage a battery and shuts down when the grid fails. A hybrid inverter does the same job and also charges and discharges a battery, so it can store surplus power for the evening and keep selected circuits running during outages.

Huawei or Deye: which inverter should I choose?

Huawei is a benchmark for on-grid inverters, with high efficiency and the FusionSolar app, but it only works with its own high-voltage batteries. Deye is very common in Morocco for 48 V hybrid systems and accepts many lithium batteries on the market. The right choice depends on whether you want a battery now or later, and on budget.

Do I need a permit to install a solar inverter in Morocco?

The whole grid-connected installation, not the inverter alone, falls under Law 82-21, in force since 9 June 2026. Systems below 11 kW only need a declaration to the grid operator (ONEE or the regional multi-service company), 11 kW to 5 MW need a connection agreement, and larger plants need an authorisation.

How long does a solar inverter last?

Less long than the panels. Manufacturers usually warrant inverters for 5 to 10 years depending on brand and country. A cool, ventilated location extends their life, but plan for one replacement over the 25 to 30-year life of the panels.

Can I run a hybrid inverter without a battery?

Many hybrid inverters can run without a battery, like an on-grid unit, and accept one later, which spreads the investment. Check on the datasheet that this mode is supported and which batteries are compatible.
